Dr. Richelle Smith
I have had a love of animals and a genuine passion for veterinary medicine my entire life and have known that I wanted to be a veterinarian since the time I was able to say the word. My education began at age fourteen when I started working in dog boarding and training kennels, with obedience instructors and as an assistant in veterinary facilities. This has given me over twenty years of experience working with sporting, agility, conformation and obedience dogs, developing expertise with many different breeds. I have also been actively involved with both cat and dog rescue since age 16 and have over 20 years of experience with the unique needs of rescued pets.
I graduated from the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1999 after completing my undergraduate studies at MSU.
I first practiced medicine at a small animal clinic in Grand Haven, MI and then was invited to help develop the surgical center at the Ottawa Shores Humane Society in West Olive. After almost two years at the humane society, I decided to start my own private practice. Safe Harbor Animal Hospital opened its doors in February, 2002.
Areas of veterinary medicine that I am particularly passionate about include: Pediatrics and Geriatrics, Dermatology (allergies), Pain Relief and Welfare, Genetic Disorders of Purebred Dogs and Canine/Feline Behavior Modification, Learning Theory and Training. I am dedicated to daily, ongoing continuing education to help ensure our pets receive the most current diagnostics and treatments available.
My current pets include "Macey", my beautiful, rescued Golden Retriever mix, P-2, my three-legged, rescued tabby cat and various assorted “foster furkids” looking for families of their own.
I look forward to meeting you!
